oscJust like it says. First broadcast 09/05/07. And the audio file is here.

This Morning on background noise an expose of the independent Belgian label les disques du crepuscules. Courtesy mainly of the new remastered release of the first release on the label, From
Brussels with Love. Released in November 1980 as a deluxe cassette/book package.  In a clear PVC pouch and attractive 16 page booklet.
Brussels based label -dormant since 2005- issued more than 400 titles on vinyl, cassette and CD, and also tried its luck in book publishing, video production and fashion. The sheer musical variety ranging from pop to jazz and from classical to experimental music
Brussels With Love featured 22 exclusive tracks (not available elsewhere) from the international avant garde and new wave, as well as the celebrated Factory  Records roster.  The CD has been remastered from the original master tapes and released on the label Les Temps Modernes. Now a selection covering post punk, avant-garde and spoken word and experimental all frozen in time in November 1980 from
England and the continent.

Brussels.  Joy Division (gigging abroad for the first time), Cabaret Voltaire and William Burroughs performed at the promoters duo’s first night on October the 16th. They were later followed by many hot and important bands from the post-punk era, most of them British. For one reason or another, especially the Factory artists enjoyed their stay in
Brussels. Duval’s idea to release some (shelved) Factory material was picked up by Factory boss Tony Wilson and Factory
Benelux was born, in the Spring of 1980.
But since Duval and Honoré were also interested in releasing material from other artists and bands, they founded their own label: Les Disques Du Crepuscule, in April 1980.the durutti column         Piece for an Ideal                                                                                                                     Radio Romance            Etrange Afinite                                                      Gavin Bryars                White’s SS                                                                    Der plan                       meine freunde                                                   Gilbert and Lewis          twist up                                                                                                                                                Now the great compilation fruit of the original sin released by les disques du crepuscules in 1981.  Another snapshot of the avant-garde at the time.Artist                           Title                                                                             Winston  Tong              the Next Best thing to death                              William S. Background Noise: New releases on Staubgold & Quecksilber

Posted in Background Noise by Ellard on May 18, 2007

Just like it says. Broadcast 11/04/07. And the magic link is here.

, This Morning brand new releases on the
Berlin sister labels Staubgold and quecksilber. By Rafael Toral from Portugal and Reuber from
Firstly however the CD Space by Rafael Toral on the Staubgold label from last year. Rafael Toral is part of the growing and expanding electronic and experimental music scene in the very traditional Fadu

land of
Portugal. Rafael Toral is a musician and sound engineer also active in visual arts. Born in
Lisbon, Portugal in 1967, he has been performing live since 1984

Having attempted to study music, he realized his path was one of exploration and discovery, to which conventional music teaching was irrelevant. Considered by the Chicago Reader to be “one of the most gifted and innovative guitarists of the decade”, his work focuses mainly on the possibilities of ambient music (variable attention listening process), the electric guitar as a sound generator and improvisation with higher levels of risk (using instruments or systems that behave in unpredictable ways). Exploring relations between sound phenomena such as resonance or difference tones and the human capacity for creative listening, Toral has developed a sound world weaving a unique blend of references such as ambient, rock, chance and improvisationToral performed extensively throughout Europe, Japan and North America, mostly solo but having as well collaborated with Sei Miguel, Phill Niblock, Rhys Chatham, John Zorn, Thurston Moore, Dean Roberts, Christian Fennesz, John Tilbury and Jim O’Rourke. The Sound Systems he has developed include glove controlled computer sinewaves on the new CD,
